Refund Alert: The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) is taking additional steps to protect Illinois taxpayers from identity theft and fraud. To ensure the security and confidentiality of taxpayer information, IDOR has initiated a review process to combat against fraudulently filed returns. As a result of the new security measures, IDOR does not anticipate releasing Individual Income Tax refunds until March 1, 2016.

W-2 Filing Requirement Alert: The file transmission of W-2s and W-2cs must be direct to the Department of Revenue in one of the methods described here. The transmission to Illinois is separate from the transmission to the Social Security Administration. For 2016, the 2015 W-2s are due on or before Monday, February 15, 2016.

IL-1040-V and IL-1040-ES Alert: If paying by a paper check, make sure that the voucher (IL-1040-V and IL-1040-ES) sent with the payment shows the correct scan line. The voucher should display the full Social Security number. The scan line at the bottom of the voucher should not contain any asterisks or other symbols. The full Social Security number information in the scan line helps the payment be quickly applied to the correct account – avoiding errors and delays.

Note: Effective January 1, 2016, the Individual Income Tax exemption amount increased from $2,150 to $2,175. Booklet IL-700-T, Illinois Withholding Tax Tables for 2016, is now available on our website. Booklet IL-700-T provides formulas and tables for employers to calculate the amount of tax to withhold from employee paychecks.
